Permanent Relief From Chronic Pain

Experience The Power Of Myofascial Release

What Is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial (my-oh-FAH-shul) release is a technique that falls under the category of massage therapy or, even more advanced, Structural Integration.

All muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves, and organs are surrounded by a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue called fascia. We are quite literally water balloons within water balloons within water balloons. These layers of fascia develop adhesions (spots where they stick together) due to inflammation, trauma, repetitive motion, and basically what we ask our bodies to do on a daily basis. Fascial adhesion is an efficiency mechanism.

For example, if you sit at a desk or in an automobile with your arms extended in front of you for eight hours a day, the muscles of your shoulder and chest will fuse together in that position. This adhesion makes your body more efficient at doing what you are asking it to do (you burn less fuel). However, when you put your arms down, those muscles stay stuck in that other posture, resulting in shoulder dysfunction. This dysfunction is typically why your shoulders are rounded forward and up by your ears, and you have upper back and neck pain, including tension headaches and TMJ. The problem is not in your back and/or neck, that’s the symptom. The problem is actually in your chest and deep shoulder muscles.

Fascial adhesions can be permanently released by progressively stretching and compressing the fascia where it is adhered (stuck together) until a noticeable release is felt. Constant steady pressure and stretching literally melts your fascia which allows your therapist the opportunity to separate muscles that should not be stuck together in an ideal world. As a result, your body returns to a more natural, pain-free, balanced alignment.

However, this liquification takes a lot more time than most people realize. This is the significant difference between myofascial release and deep tissue massage. When we target adhesions, we don’t just rub them for a couple of minutes as is standard for deep tissue massage. Typical deep tissue does nothing but warm up the tissue, and increase blood flow. While this will make you feel better temporarily, in a day you will be right back where you started.

Skilled myofascial release erases years of adhesion in a single session. When we find where your body is stuck, we get the knots out whether it takes 5 minutes or 30. This is why myofascial release sessions are typically focused on a specific area. It takes time to separate muscles and break up adhesions; Only then are you changing the structure of your body; Only then will you have lasting relief.

Adhered connective tissue frequently traps groups of muscles and nerves causing pain, tightness, reduced range of motion, and/or poor posture. This can be addressed with myofascial release. The treatment deals with the underlying structural dysfunction that does not react quickly to other forms of therapy. What takes physical therapy months to accomplish, we can achieve in a matter of minutes.

Myofascial release increases your range of motion and circulation permanently, while decreasing pressure on joints and nerves, leading to less overall discomfort, more range of motion, decreased stress, a feeling of physical health, and an outward appearance of better posture.

Most massage therapists receive a week or two of myofascial release training in massage school. This is meant to be an introduction, but unfortunately, most therapists say they perform myofascial release. True myofascial release takes hundreds of hours of advanced training and experience. At Satsang Sports Massage, we specialize in this treatment, and have the advanced training to back it up. In our experience myofascial release is the fastest, most effective way to alleviate pain and provide balance to the body and mind.

Problem: Stubborn aches and pains? Tired and overworked? Limited range of motion or dealing with an injury?

You have probably endured a lot of consultations in your life and have not received the relief that you desire or were promised. Whether it is spending money on over-the-counter or prescription medication, physical therapy, self-massage tools, or countless hours of research and time spent on alternative solutions like stretching, foam rolling, exercise bands, etc. Chances are you don’t need surgery, and it’s not a result of “getting old”. Let us teach you why you haven’t been getting better, and show you how you can actually heal. Enough is enough, it is time to get back to life.

Solution: Receiving a myofascial release session, from an expert therapist, will give you the results you have been looking for and allow you to start living your life again.

Amazing. Doesn’t fluff at all. You say what hurts and he attacks it with vigor starting with the first minute(as he should, it’s your dollar and time). I wouldn’t even say he does “massages,” it’s really therapy. It’s sometimes uncomfortable and sometimes even worse, but the best I ever feel is after a session with Sean. It’s always worth it. Stop reading and go.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

How often should I get a myofascial release massage?
My patients ask me about it all the time. The ideal strategy is to begin slowly and progress as you are ready to do so. For the first several weeks, you can do it once a week or once a month. In the event that you require additional time, do what you're now doing.

How long is the session?
90min session - All services are at the same hourly rate.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for a massage?
Stay hydrated! If you are dehydrated it makes a massage a lot more painful.

Do I have to take all my clothes off?
No, we allow every client to undress to their own comfort level. Your body is under a sheet on the table and we uncover the areas of your body that need work one at a time. The areas you don't want to be exposed to are never exposed, and we take great care to make you comfortable. Most people go completely undressed or wear underwear that doesn't cover much skin.
